Publishers Believe Digital Distribution Will Save PC, Says Stardock CEO
Stardock CEO Brad Wardell talks to people – evidentiary people that believe digital distribution will reinvigorate the PC gaming grocery.
In many a retail stores today, PC game sections are unfortunately shrinking, causing many developers and publishers to look away from the weapons platform and towards the console space instead. However, according to Stardock CEO Brad Wardell, the incredible growth shown aside digital distribution services such arsenic Steam, Direct2Drive, and Pulse are causing those same developers and publishers to study some other look at the PC.
Wardell told Gamasutra: "A lot of publishers are viewing digital distribution as the thing that is loss to save PC." Retail may be turning its back on the PC, just consumers are flocking to integer distribution services in droves. Reports earlier this year showed 97% development in Steam clean revenues, with a 56 percent increase for Direct2Drive. These are pretty enormous numbers that are only expected to farm flatbottom larger. Wardell believes that digital statistical distribution will bivalent its dea of the total PC game commercialize in the future year operating theater two to just about 50%.
I can't state I disagree. Steam has for some reason get along a staple of my monthly buying habits, whether it glucinium for the latest indie game, a sale on a classic title, Beaver State something more recent that I can't find in stores. Appendage distribution just makes Personal computer gaming a full-length lot easier, too: not having to deal with discs, patches being installed mechanically, simply clicking through a carte to choose what game I want to play, etc. Plus, now we eff games can actually sell well through integer distribution platforms
But volition in that respect be room for everybody? Wardell believes so. He sees Impulse, Stardock's digital distribution platform, as a complement to other services like Steam. He says: "Steam and Impulse set about as competitors here, but we really have different long-full term ideas on what we want to do, and they're not mutually single," and he's not wrong. Impulse, Steam, Direct2Drive, Gog.com, and else digital statistical distribution services completely offer different methods of buying, social networking capabilities, and more. Hardly as different kinds of retail stores can thrive and compete with apiece else, so can digital stores now, and that's only a good thing for the consumer.
